He was elected to Rajya Sabha on 24th April 2021 as a CPI (M) member. Before getting elected to the Indian Parliament, he functioned as one of the advisors (2016-2021) to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri Pinarayi Vijayan.During his long media innings, he held several important positions and portfolios including the post of the Business Head of Star – Disney Group in Kerala.
Dr John Brittas was active in student politics during his college days and one of the office bearers of the University Students Union. After graduaton he made his foray into journalism and soon he was deputed to New Delhi. He worked from Delhi as a print journalist and also as an electronic media person and had the opportunity to cover important events that shaped the Indian society and polity. The demolition of Babri Masjid, Gujarat riots, happenings in Pakistan and Nepal election are amongst the important events that he witnessed and reported about. He was the first Indian journalist to be in Baghdad to cover the US-Iraq conflict which eventually led to the dethronement of Sadam Hussain. The news snippets disseminated from Iraq titled “Baghdad Diary” was picked up by various media organisations. He spent about a fortnight in Pakistan understanding the socio-political verticals of that nation. Dr John Brittas had the opportunity to be the part of Prime Minister’s media team which visited US, Russia, Germany, Switzerland, etc. Dr John Brittas was fortunate to be a journalist covering the Indian Parliament at an young age and he held Central Hall and Long and Distinguished (L&D) Journalist Pass for a long time.
Dr John Brittas is one of the prominent faces of the Television and many of his shows received wide acclamation and popular support. Question Time, Cross Fire, JB Junction (Kairali TV) and Nammal Thammil (Asianet) gained huge attraction from the viewers. He also regularly contributes articles on socio political issues in the print media. He authored many books such as Chillujalakakkootil, Innocent Samsarikunnu, Malayalathinte Manavikatha, Sthreeparvam and Marayillathe. He also acted in Malayalam Movie “Vellivelichathil” in the title role.
